NCAA Semifinal Analysis: How Northwestern Won

I never thought that a Maryland-Northwestern game could have any kind of anticlimactic feel to it, but after Syracuse erased a seven-goal deficit to beat Florida in double overtime in what is one of the more dramatic finishes to a game in recent memory, that?s almost what this game seemed like.

The Terps got off to a quick start, scoring their first goal just 11 seconds into the game, but cooled a bit after that. Northwestern bested the Terps 9-7 to earn their eighth straight championship game appearance. The run ties the one Maryland made from 1994-2001.

Here?s how the Wildcats came out with the victory:

1. They Won Draws

This alone impacted the game more than anything else. Coaches always emphasize how important the draw and possession is and this game was a perfect example of it. Northwestern held a slight advantage on the draw circle in the first half, winning six to Maryland?s four, but it was in the second half where this possession battle really came into play as the Wildcats won seven to the Terps? one and dominated possession time.

Northwestern won the draw with both Tewaaraton finalist Taylor Thornton using her height and wingspan to come up with balls on the circle and Alyssa Leonard, who takes the draw, getting it to her own stick.

After losing the draw battle to Florida 18-5 in the ALC championship game ? and losing the game in the process ? Northwestern refocused and put extra time into making the draw a stronger part of their game. Leonard, Thornton and Gabriella Flibotte, who also plays on the circle, spent hours before and after practice working together to box out and get the ball in their stick.

?We really committed to it and we practiced and practiced and practiced and I give a lot of credit to Alyssa Leonard,? said Northwestern coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. ?She took it to heart and took it really seriously and Taylor did a really great job. Winning the draws 13-5 was huge.?

2. They Got Timely Saves from Brianne LoManto

LoManto?s save numbers don?t necessarily jump off the stats in this game, (five saves) but she was extremely important to the Wildcat defense and creating momentum at key points throughout the game.

Maryland has a roster full of talented shooters and the Terps are generally pretty good at getting a stick fake in to move the goalie, particularly when they?re on the crease. LoManto?s presence in cage Friday night can not go overlooked as she turned Maryland away on critical point blank scoring opportunities.

?One of the things I?ve learned in the 10 years I?ve played goalie is that sometimes it?s not how many you have in a game, it?s when you have the saves,? LoManto said. ?I was trying to stay patient and confident. I know what I can do. Our defense played extremely well. They were giving up low angle shots. I could have done better with eight meters but they had my back and when maybe they let a girl up on the crease, I was able to have their back. It was important to making those saves at critical moments.?

3. Maryland Couldn?t Finish On Their Chances

A lack of possession and struggles finishing often go hand-in-hand as an offense that goes without the ball for extended periods of time tends to rush and make bad decisions when they finally do get the ball. This happened a few times to the Terps in the second half as they would get the ball in on offense only to immediately throw it away on a bad pass or by going to goal on the first scoring chance rather than being patient and waiting for the right one.

?The one thing we should have done a better job of was finishing the opportunities that we had,? Maryland coach Cathy Reese said. ?We had great looks on goal. We really did and we didn?t finish them. That?s something that seems so easy to say, but in the moment, we fell short in that area and without having possession off the draw or finishing your shots, that?s not a good combination.?

Tactile Tablet Sleeves - Formatron Skinny iPad Case is Light in the Hand and Fine for the Fingertips (TrendHunter.com)

There are so many fantastic features to Apple?s iPads, yet one of the rare, complaints still concerns the gadget?s keyboard. The Formatron Skinny iPad Case gives users the opportunity to interact with their tablets and bypass the tricky touchscreen interface, with a separate QWERTY typepad built right into the protective fabric sleeve.

The Hatch & Co. accessory comprises two slip pockets, one for your device and another for the super slim keyboard. A stitched window surrounds the typer and stiff grips hold the tablet in place. When opened, the screen can be perched at a convenient angle so that one might use this setup much like a laptop computer. Even with its aesthetic, practical and technological features, the Formatron Skinny iPad Case is more slender than many on the market.

Prosthetic retina offers simple solution for restoring sight

ScienceDaily (May 17, 2012) ? A device which could restore sight to patients with one of the most common causes of blindness in the developed world is being developed in an international partnership.

Researchers from the University of Strathclyde and Stanford University in California are creating a prosthetic retina for patients of age related macular degeneration (AMD), which affects one in 500 patients aged between 55 and 64 and one in eight aged over 85.

The device would be simpler in design and operation than existing models. It acts by electrically stimulating neurons in the retina, which are left relatively unscathed by the effects of AMD while other 'image capturing' cells, known as photoreceptors, are lost.

It would use video goggles to deliver energy and images directly to the eye and be operated remotely via pulsed near infra-red light- unlike most prosthetic retinas, which are powered through coils that require complex surgery to be implanted.

The prosthetic retina is a thin silicon device that converts pulsed near infra-red light to electrical current that stimulates the retina and elicits visual perception. It requires no wires and would make surgical implantation simpler.

The device has been shown to produce encouraging responses in initial lab tests and is reported in an article published in Nature Photonics. The technology is now being developed further.

Dr Keith Mathieson, now a Reader in the Institute of Photonics at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, was one of the lead researchers and first author of the paper. He said: "AMD is a huge medical challenge and, with an aging population, is continuing to grow. This means that innovative, practical solutions are essential if sight is to be restored to people around the world with the condition.

"The prosthetic retina we are developing has been partly inspired by cochlear implants for the ear but with a camera instead of a microphone and, where many cochlear implants have a few channels, we are designing the retina to deal with millions of light sensitive nerve cells and sensory outputs.

"The implant is thin and wireless and so is easier to implant. Since it receives information on the visual scene through an infra-red beam projected through the eye, the device can take advantage of natural eye movements that play a crucial role in visual processing."

The research was co-authored by Dr. Jim Loudin of Stanford and led by Professor Daniel Palanker, also of Stanford, and Professor Alexander Sher, of the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Professor Palanker said: "The current implants are very bulky, and the surgery to place the intraocular wiring for receiving, processing and power is difficult. With our device, the surgeon needs only to create a small pocket beneath the retina and then slip the photovoltaic cells inside it."

Dr Mathieson was supported through a fellowship from SU2P, a venture between academic institutions in Scotland and California aimed at extracting economic impact from their joint research portfolio in photonics and related technologies.

Strathclyde leads the collaboration, which also includes Stanford, the Universities of St Andrews, Heriot-Watt and Glasgow and the California Institute of Technology. SU2P was established through funding from Research Councils UK- as part of its Science Bridges awards- the Scottish Funding Council and Scottish Enterprise.

The research links to Photonics and Health Technologies at Strathclyde- two of the principal themes of the University's Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC), a world-leading research and technology centre transforming the way universities, business, and industry collaborate.

Through Health Technologies at Strathclyde, academics work with industry and the health sector to find technologies for earlier, more accurate disease detection and better treatments, as well as life-long disease prevention.

Does a military solution for Somali piracy work?

Somali pirate attacks have dropped, from 45 in 2010 to 24 in 2011, but there's no evidence that more naval patrols and aggressive private security firms are actually keeping pirates ashore.?

To some, the solution to Somali piracy is blindingly obvious. Patrol the seas. Capture the pirates. Send them to the briny deep. If it worked on the Barbary Coast, it should work in Somalia.

But with Somali pirates going further out to sea, such a solution is more difficult than it sounds. Patrolling the narrow waters of the Gulf of Aden ? as the European Naval Force and some other countries such as China, India, Japan, Russia, and Taiwan are doing ? is relatively simple. Patrolling the much broader Indian Ocean, where Somali pirates have moved, is more difficult.

And for those pirate crews who do get captured, there?s one more consideration. Where do you take them for trial? Very few nations ? none of them, interestingly, in the countries providing naval patrols off the Somali coast ? have taken Somali pirates to put them on trial. Most pirates who do get captured are simply disarmed, dragged in their skiffs closer to Somali shores, and released.

As a Guardian headline this week sums it up, ?Outgunned Somali pirates can hardly believe their luck.?

Not all of the navies patrolling for pirates use gentle methods, of course. In November 2008, the Indian Navy sank a pirate ship in the Gulf of Aden. Russian Navy sailors apparently captured a Somali pirate ship earlier this year, and blew it up afterward. The video of this action went viral, alleging that the Russian sailors blew up the ship with the pirates on board, but there is no proof of that. (Advisory note: the video contains violence and may be difficult for sensitive viewers to watch). And on March 25, 2011, private security guards aboard a commercial freighter called the Avocet opened fire on an apparent Somali pirate crew aboard a skiff. The pirates never made it aboard the ship, but the video stirred controversy about the use of force in commercial shipping.

Does militarizing the seas actually deter piracy? The data don?t provide easy answers.

Since 2008, Somali pirate gangs have launched more than 800 attacks on commercial ships, with 170 ships hijacked, and 3,400 sailors held for ransom. Shipping firms have paid more than $530 million on private security firms during that time period, and $160 million was paid out to pirate gangs last year alone.

That, clearly, is the reason Somali gangs get into the pirate business. Do a few well-armed security guards onboard commercial ships, or a few naval patrol ships deter those pirates from taking to the high seas? Some point to the dropping number of pirate attacks ? from 45 attacks in 2010 to 24 in 2011 ? as a sign that naval patrolling and private security may be working.

Tizen developer phone appears, complete with 4.3-inch screen and dual-core CPU (video)

Not satisfied by the currently available mobile OS options? Tizen could be your next option, and Samsung just took the wraps off of a prototype device (possibly the GT-I9500 we'd heard about) at the currently ongoing developer's conference in San Francisco. As seen above in still photos taken by Tizen Talk, the developer unit running Tizen 1.0 features a 4.3-inch screen and reportedly contains a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU. There are more details revealed in a seven minute video posted by The Handheld Blog (embedded after the break), showing off a very TouchWiz-inspired experience which while plain and without many of the animations and transitions of polished release-quality software, did appear to run smoothly. The HTML5 apps themselves however, tended to lag a bit, although even at this early stage it showed off quite a bit of built-in support for social services like Facebook, Twitter and Gmail. We should find out more about the coalition's plans over the next few days, for now check out the hands-on video and see if this Linux-based software has any more promise than webOS or the same MeeGo platform it dislodged.
